Mengkuang Dam

Mengkuang dam is the biggest dam in Penang, 23,639 million litres of storage capacity but it is not the main water supply source for Penang, almost 80% of treated water was come from Sungai Muda, Kedah.

Penang has 3 dams
Mengkuang Dam (mainland)
- The biggest in Penang

Teluk Bahang Dam (at island)
- Newest dam, built around 1999 by China company
- 7 times larger than Ayer Itam dam
- Near to Penang Butterfly farm

Ayer Itam Dam (at island)
- Opened in 1962
- 700 feets above sea level, near to Kek Lok Si Temple

In Penang, dam is place for recreation and tourist attraction (actually I don't think so, seldom see any foreigner around the areas). Place for jogging, hiking, sport (dragon boat) and also good for family day, too. Since the places are far from urbanized area and close to catchment zone so the air is quite fresh, the scene also quite charming. You can take a visit to the places when you are in Penang, close to mother nature and learn to appreciate them, especially the precious water.
